Golf For Beginners - A Few Tips When Starting Out

The first thing you must know is Golf is the rules and regulations, etiquette and such like.
Many golf clubs insist you wear the correct attire including shoes, glove and general clothing and in a lot of Golfing clubs it simply is not acceptable to not do so.
This is not the case in all clubs and many Clubs will turn a blind eye to the complete beginner as long as they are chaperoned by an experienced player who is a member.
That said, many clubs will simply not accept you unless you have a certain handicap and you meet the criteria required to make you eligible for membership.
Here are a few points you need to know right off the bat.
1. How to play Golf
Golf requires much practice and patience and can be very frustrating. It often is found especially by beginners that they will never be able to grasp what is needed and therefore give up after spending a lot of money on clubs and other attire to only find they can't get on with it.
One of the easiest and cost effective ways for you to start is to use your local driving range to give you a taster to see if it is something you like, if not all you have lost is a couple hours and a tiny bit of money.
Most driving ranges will provide you with a couple of clubs on a hire basis so you don't even have to buy your own.
2. Golf Attire
As with many other things, Golf can be an extremely expensive hobby or as cheap as you like.
For the beginner I would recommend you only buy a cheap set of clubs, golf balls and clothing until you reach the standard level and you become better all round.
Your clothing only has to consist of cheap, but smart looking polo shirt and chinos or looking like chino pants. Stay away from denim as you will find it tight fitting so you won't be able to play the game properly and many clubs don't allow it anyway.
3. Etiquette of Golf
Despite rumours to the contrary you will find that all different Golfing Clubs have their own rules and regulations.
This is something you will have to look out for when you think about joining a club. Ask people who are already members and pick up little tricks and advice from them.
A few bullet points on etiquette are:-
Let better more experienced players play through. They will be very frustrated and annoyed if you are holding them up.
Be polite and just ask them if they would like to go through. Remember they were once beginners too and they will appreciate and respect you for it and you may make new friends from who you can learn from.

Be silent and courteous when you are playing. This is an absolute must. Be noisy and disruptive and you may be dismissed from the club and banned altogether.
Where the ball lands is where you continue from. You cannot put the ball back on a tee or remove it out of the rough if it lands there.

Make sure you mark your own Golf ball. Many Golf balls are identical and when you strike your ball in the distance you may end up actually reshooting another ball you think is your but it is not. So mark your ball with a felt tip pen or similar.

Carry no more than 14 golf clubs in your Golf Bag.
